Messer: Eliminate Tax Credits For People Living In U.S. Illegally

Republican Rep. Luke Messer is pushing Congress to eliminate tax credits for people living in the country illegally.

In a speech earlier this month, Messer urged his colleagues to include the measure as part of President Trump’s overall tax reform plan.

He also sent a letter to the head of the Senate Finance Committee and the House Ways and Means Committee asking for their support.

Messer says his bill closes that loophole.

“We’re going to save $4 to $7 billion a year that can be used to expand the child tax credit for American citizens and folks who are working hard here and following the law,” Messer says.

The budget proposal President Trump submitted earlier this year includes eliminating Child Tax Credits and the Earned Income Tax Credit for anyone who does not have a social security number.
