Rep. Messer wants spending cut tied to raising debt limit
September 03, 2017
U.S. Rep. Luke Messer believes any increase in the nation’s debt ceiling should be tied to a reduction in federal spending.
During a telephone interview with The Herald Bulletin on Tuesday, Messer, R-6th District, said historically when the federal debt ceiling is raised there is a corresponding reduction in spending.
“It was done that way during the administrations of Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton and George Bush,” he said. “President (Barack) Obama tried to get around it with what he called a ‘clean budget.’”
