WBIW: Messer Pushes To Include Permanent Repeal Of Medical Device Tax In Spending Bill

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – U.S. Rep. Luke Messer (IN-06) Wednesday called for the upcoming government funding bill to include the repeal of Obamacare’s medical device tax.

The medical device tax was passed as part of Obamacare and imposes a 2.3 percent excise tax on all medical device sales. In 2015, Congress voted to delay the tax for two years and this week, the tax went back into effect.

“Obamacare’s medical device tax is bad for Hoosiers and must be repealed,” Messer said. “This tax halts innovation, prevents expansion and freezes hiring in Warsaw, Bloomington, Mishawaka, Indianapolis and other Hoosier communities. It’s time we provide certainty in the marketplace, or risk having these jobs shipped overseas.”

Messer is an original cosponsor of Rep. Jackie Walorski’s (IN-02) legislation, H.R. 4617, which suspends the medical device tax for five years.

Medical device companies employ roughly 16,000 people in Indiana, second in the nation only to California.
